Oud Perfume কী এবং কেন এত দামি?

Blue Oud Perfume Bangladesh

Ask any perfume lover in Bangladesh which ingredient feels most luxurious, and the answer is almost always the same: oud. But what exactly is oud, why do genuine oud perfumes cost so much more than ordinary fragrances, and how can you tell whether a bottle deserves its price? This guide explains oud in simple words — no chemistry degree needed.

What Is Oud?

Oud — also called agarwood, aloeswood, or dehn al oud in Arabic — comes from the Aquilaria tree, which grows in parts of South and Southeast Asia, including Assam, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. The plain wood of this tree has almost no scent. The magic happens only when the tree is wounded or infected by a particular mould: to defend itself, the tree slowly produces a dark, fragrant resin inside the wood. That resin-soaked wood is agarwood, and the oil distilled from it is oud — one of the most prized perfume ingredients on earth.

This is why oud is sometimes called “liquid gold”. Nature makes it rarely, slowly, and unpredictably. Most Aquilaria trees never produce good resin at all.

Why Is Oud So Expensive?

It takes decades. A tree may need 20–30 years or more before its resin is worth harvesting, and the infection process itself can take years. It is genuinely rare. Wild agarwood has been over-harvested for centuries, so high-grade wood is scarce and protected; much of today’s supply comes from plantations, which still require years of patience. Very little oil comes from a lot of wood. Distilling oud oil is slow, skilled work, and the yield is tiny compared with the wood used. Demand keeps rising. Oud is the soul of Arabic perfumery, and as Gulf and Asian markets grow, the best grades are competed for by the world’s biggest perfume houses. Put those together and the price explains itself — you are paying for rarity, time and craftsmanship, not for a brand’s marketing.

Types of Oud You Will Hear About

Hindi (Assam) oud is the classic powerhouse: deep, leathery, smoky and animalic — loved by traditionalists. Cambodian oud is smoother and sweeter, with dried-fruit and honey tones that beginners find friendlier. Thai and Indonesian ouds tend to be greener, woodier and more modern in feel. Most perfumes sold today blend natural oud with supporting notes — musk, amber, rose, saffron, vanilla — or combine a touch of natural oud with high-quality aroma materials to keep the price reachable while preserving the oud character.

Oud Oil, Oud Perfume and Bakhoor — What Is the Difference?

Oud oil (dehn al oud) is the pure, concentrated oil, applied in tiny amounts directly on skin; it is the most traditional and most intense format, and a small bottle lasts a very long time. Oud perfume is a spray in which oud is blended with other notes — easier to wear, easier to dose, and the format of most modern Arabic perfumes in our Woody & Oud collection. Bakhoor is oud wood chips, often scented, burned on charcoal or an electric burner to fragrance homes, clothes and mosques rather than skin. Many families in Bangladesh enjoy all three: bakhoor for the home, oil for prayer and special days, and a spray for daily wear.

How to Choose Your First Oud Perfume

Start softer than you think. If you are new to oud, begin with a modern, balanced blend like Blue Oud, where marine freshness and cardamom make the oud smooth and approachable. When you fall for the depth, graduate to a traditional statement like Wasm Al Oud, which is almost pure oud character. Our premium oud perfumes guide walks through more options by style, and the long-lasting perfume guide shows how to make any oud perform at its best in our climate. One honest warning: real oud is never the cheapest bottle in the shop. If the price looks impossible, read our guide on how to spot fake Arabic perfume before you buy.

The Bottom Line

Oud costs more because the earth makes it slowly and rarely, and perfumers treasure it for the same reason you will: nothing else smells as deep, warm and unforgettable, and nothing else lasts as long on the skin. When you buy a genuine oud perfume, you are wearing decades of a tree’s patience in a single spray.
